When we lash out at curious and well-meaning people who are aware of their ignorance but don't know how to ask questions, we shut down the dialogue that we claim to want. And when we squabble and undercut each other because we fear that there is
not enough settlement to go around, the white man laughs.

And what does the future hold? We are generations removed from those who were more directly harmed by colonization and yet I see people much younger than I express vitriol that is disproportionate to their proximity to both harm and opportunity.

My family was torn apart by the sixties scoop. I was not able to hold them in my arms until I was fifty years of age. I could easily tote my bitterness for those stolen decades, dumping it at the feet of anyone I could plausibly hold culpable. But why?

There are role models for free expression in the face of institutional oppression, but sadly they are a dying breed. One of my favourite orators is Chief Dan George. On July 1, 1967, on Canada's 100th birthday, Chief Dan George delivered his “Lament for Confederation” in front of a crowd 32,000 people at Empire Stadium. I profiled him and his magnificent address in the opening segment of a podcast:

We are too often an embarrassment to his example and the hopes he had for us in an environment of opportunity he only dreamed of. We've embraced the current openness to discuss what reconciliation means by testing the tolerance of those listening ears by screaming at them, taunting them, embarrassing them, dismissing them, labelling them, and talking down to them. No better than the settler.

I attended a land event for yesterday's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The event organizers welcomed a mix of Metis, First Nation, and Settler attendees and the session began with a teaching from an Elder. About two-thirds into the talk, a setter woman raised her hand and asked to learn more about the Seven Grandfather Teachings. This was a breach of protocol, but not an ill-intended one. One of the attendees snapped at the woman harshly, explaining that that would be an entirely different teaching itself, if not seven. The settler woman was clearly embarrassed and she and her family did not remain for the activity. Further, the attendee and a person they were sitting with spent considerable time whispering and pointing before and after the teaching ("Who is that?" "Who are they?")

It was an embarrassment for the settler, surely, but also for the organization that hosted it and for the Day itself which purported to be about reconciliation.

I thought I'd heard the worst of it until I saw a post on social media from one of the two attendees, criticizing the settler and most of the whites encountered that day for their "performative allyship". Does it exist? Certainly... and usually on social media much as this attendee's public display of performative protest.

If we want a dialogue with settlers, understand that part of that process is helping them to understand protocol. Learn to distinguish what performance really is. Someone touting their involvement with Indigenous justice is a performer, and they come in all colours. But a person asking a question out of turn needn't be humiliated. Another approach is to come over to them and whisper an offer to talk about it later. After the talk, explaining that the Teachings are Love, Respect, Bravery, Truth, Honesty, Humility, and Wisdom -- and that each is worthy of a talk themselves -- might be enough. Inviting that person and their family to join you for the land activity that followed might have been the beginning of meaningful relationship with new allies.

Instead, I am struck by how we fail to exercise Love, Respect, and Humility when confronted with the chance to put them into action.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-75883364307490076402023-07-22T07:33:00.001-04:002023-07-22T07:33:00.133-04:00My 3 Month Report Card, Round Two

Three months ago I started a weight loss program, much as I'd done over a decade earlier. Now in my 50s, I didn't know if I could expect to see the same results. In 2012, I lost 37 pounds in 3 months. What was possible in 2013?

Even better results. This time I didn't exercise nearly as much, focusing most of my attention to eating 1,500 calories per day -- enough to satisfy my basal metabolic rate (BMR). In doing so, my body didn't go into starvation mode. It pulled energy from stored fat, just as it should, resulting in a loss of 45 pounds.

As I observed back in 2012, exercising complicates your net calorie intake. It depletes some of those eaten calories, requiring you to eat more in order to ensure that your BMR is satisfied. But who knows exactly how much energy you are burning through exercise? Apps like Fitotrack or Runkeeper make a best guess. Wearing a heart rate monitor can also provide estimates.

It was a hassle, I decided. This time I chose to exercise less, and thus burn fewer excess calories. In turn, my body was never in a serious deficit and burned fat to make up for the calories I budgeted (1500/day).

Once I reach my weight goal, I intend to continue with the nearly-daily walks and add free weights back into the mix. And I also have to continue logging and stay connected with a community. Visibility and accountability are necessary for me, or the weight will come back again a third time.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-81281880099774199522023-06-28T08:02:00.001-04:002023-06-28T08:02:20.163-04:00A Fan Got a Print of My Book Before I Did

My book of pre-generated non-player characters (NPCs) for Old-School RPGs is not officially available in print

There was a CBC article that likened it to Batman's toolbelt, which is as good and memorable a comparison that a modern society could grasp. But what was useful during for the fur traders and trappers doesn't apply to most of us today. What use does it have for today's Metis?

The most unsettling things I've read suggest that the sash is only important ceremonially, or as adornment -- a visual symbol of identity. I think that is crass underestimation.

The sash is a story -- a sad one and a hopeful one, but an import ant one that reminds Metis who they are, where they will go, and what the costs were in getting this far.

I've read a lot about the symbolism of the colours. Not everyone agrees universally, and that's fine. Trying to make every Indigenous person or community fit into a tightly fitted container of sameness is not something we should aspire to emulate. Even the word Indigenous itself is a convenient shorthand meant to combine an immense diversity of peoples.

One thing that is commonly agreed on is that red is the colour of blood: blood that was shed by Metis to preserve rights, freedoms, culture and identity. My sash is a reproduction of the one worn by Louis Riel in the months preceding this death, and by far, red is the predominant colour.

White is the spiritual connection of the Metis people to the earth beneath and the Creator above.

Blue is often suggested to be the depth of the Metis spirit, and when combined with the white in the Metis flag, it tells a beautiful story about the infinite nature of spiritual connection to the earth and the Creator. In the context of a sash, I like to think of blue as the water and sky that nourishes the people.

Green evokes the fertility of earth which, like the air and water, feeds us.

Yellow or Gold is hope for future prosperity. I never think Gold as in Gold Rush. That was a travesty against the land and the Peoples, with settlements and trap lines overrun with settler prospectors. I prefer to see grain or hide -- sustenance that the land provides.

But my favourite feature of my sash is how the strands of colour are combined in threes. In each combination there is red, suggesting the blood that was shed to preserve freedoms and values signified in the other colours of the trio. And in the very centre of the sash, three red strands which to me suggest bravery and ultimate sacrifice. Even in defeat, individual lives were given to protect and preserve an overall way of life.

Do not wear your sash as identity without knowing what your identity is. When you forget who you are, the sash is medicine. Wrap yourself in it and be reminded. Look at the colours and think about what they mean. It doesn't matter if the colours tell you the story differently. Read the story; think about the meaning; share it with people who don't understand. It is not a costume. It is your history.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-11611693625854965292023-06-14T08:57:00.003-04:002023-06-14T08:57:48.357-04:00It's November 3, 2011 all over again
I reached a milestone today. The scale read 222, which is 30 pounds less than it read on April 22, when I started this calorie counting regimen. I should be feel good about this, I know, but it's a reminder what I've only erased the damage of the last 10 years. I'm back to that same "37 pounds to go" where I was in November of 2011.

On the other hand, I lost these 30 pounds in 7.5 weeks. By doing nothing more than limiting my calories to 1500 per day, and taking a brisk 35-40 minute walk 5 days a week. It wasn't nearly as arduous as my 2011-2012 experience, where I lifted weights and did an insane number of chin-ups. I do plan to add weights back into my routine, but I've learned that the diet alone can do a lot. What I'm worrying about now is what comes after.

Even when I reach my target weight of 185, I wonder what will keep me there. Stress and limited time is what made it possible for the old weight to creep back, plus add an additional 30 pounds. I can't say that my life has become more carefree, only stressful in different ways.

I need to think more about how the next ten years can be different than the last 10 years.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-46214041292659405322023-05-20T08:35:00.015-04:002023-05-20T09:18:22.303-04:00Fighting Weight with Open Source

Before 2011, I didn't know very much about my body. Because I'd never had much interest or natural talent in sports, I assumed I wasn't athletic. I was wrong. As was the case with grade-school academics, I hadn't done well because I hadn't really applied myself.

Something in me broke that year. My mother was going through cancer treatment. My weight had been slowly increasing over 20 years. I was scared that my weight put me at greater risk for cancer and I decided to see what was possible.

I found a simple diet framework that denied me nothing. It was all about net calories. Combined with free-weights, it worked. I lost 37 pounds in 3 months and was in the best shape of my life, arguably. Sure, I weighed more than I had as 20-something, but I had muscle I'd never had before. I got on a plane and spent a week visiting with my mother and grandmother.

When I returned, the fear was gone and I'd forgotten everything I learned. I switched all my energy to my career and the weight started creeping back.

Then, a month ago I had another realization. I was feeling sick and weak again, weighing more than I had in mid-2011. Was it possible for a 50-something to accomplish what a 40-something had done?

Absolutely. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks of tracking, and I've lost over 13 pounds. I have high hopes for my 3-month report card in July.

What I learned over a decade ago was that I am a mesomorph. I still consider myself non-athletic and can't dance to save my life, but I turned out to be ideally suited for weightlifting. Simple movement. Compound exercises.

I still have the gym equipment but this time I decided to see what open source apps I could use to help track my progress. If you have an Android device, I strongly suggest you add the F-Droid app store and get as many of your apps there as you can. Here are some suggestions to make it worthwhile. Once installed, put these together in a Fitness folder on your device's main screen.

Waistline

From the app:

Waistline is a libre calorie counter and weight tracker that allows the
user to keep a diary of the food they eat and variations in their
weight. All data is kept on the user's device and can be exported or
imported easily when needed. The app includes a barcode scanner that
connects to the Open Food Facts database to pull in product information.

With minimal information and no account to sign up for, you can track your calorie intake safely and anonymously.

Functionally, this is a great replacement for MyFitnessPal, the calorie tracker I used in 2011. It does not have the exercise calorie burning built-in, but that turned out to not be significant. I set my calorie intake from 2000 down to 1500 and decided to get at least 5 walks in per week, burning ~300 calories per walk (about 35 minutes in duration).

The Open Food facts database isn't huge and it's important to double-check that the numbers are accurate. I found that some entries were incorrect because people had entered the Nutrition Facts "per 100 grams" rather than "per serving". But fixing these entries is less time consuming than adding them from scratch. But, I have needed to add some of the foods (or brands) unique to my diet. Using the barcode scanner, the app will prompt you to enter a picture and the Nutrition Facts if it doesn't recognize the barcode of the item you've scanned. Do be careful to check the setting that allows you to specify the quantity.

But what if you need more generic Nutrition Facts? For example, how many calories are in a cup of cooked white rice? Using my mobile browser's "Add to Home Screen" function, I put a link to the Nutritionix website into my Fitness folder. It's a handy shortcut. Click on the icon and search "rye bread slice" or whatever else you're looking for, then add it to Waistline's database:

Foods > (+) > (take a picture), enter the Nutrition Facts, and save.

Whenever you need motivation, look at Waistline's Statistics screen. And if you're not losing weight, lower your daily calorie goal. It starts with a default of 2000, which is average adult intake. With my starting weight, that didn't help me. I needed to bump it down to 1500, and then the pounds started coming off.

Fitotrack

From the app:

FitoTrack is a mobile app for logging and viewing your workouts. Whether
you’re running, cycling or hiking, FitoTrack will show you the most
important information, with detailed charts and statistics. It is
open-source and completely ad-free.

If you are familiar with Runkeeper, or even some of the included walking apps from some mobile phones, you'll be very comfortable with this. Again, no account to sign up for. Make sure your location is turned on, then press the (+) symbol, choose the activity, and go.

It'll draw your path on a street map and tell you (among other stats) how many calories you burned. You can either choose to "eat back" those calories, or consider them as a safety cushion while you try to eat your full allotment from the Waistline app. I've done it both ways. For now, I'm not eating back the number of calories that FitoTrack claims I've burned. It's only an estimate, anyway.

However, hitting a plateau is common during weight loss. I hit one at 10 pounds. My approach is to take a day off from the app and try to eat sensibly but with a treat that day. Ice cream or pizza is always fun. Then, go back to the app. Usually, that one day of sensible hooky is enough to convince my body it's not starving, and the weight will resume dropping. But making sure I've gotten some walking in helps to reduce the amount of weight I gain on a cheat day (usually a pound or two). This drops off within a day or two, and then the weight loss continues as before.

See you for my 3 month report card and if you want more detail on what this was like the first time thorough, my original post in 2012 was a lot more detailed.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-14899718342479190742023-03-21T02:57:00.003-04:002023-03-21T02:59:25.047-04:00Beneath the Silver Spire now in Playtesting

While waiting for Chrysogon's Coterie to go through the editing process, I started work on an adventure—my first in 40 years. It began as an open-source homage to one of my favourite modules from childhood, but soon veered sharply away.

In reviewing my battered 1980 copy, I realized that it was better in my memories than in current reality. I still liked the premise of the stolen weapons. They had power and distinctiveness, far above the typical MacGuffins that are supposed to tempt player characters into a dungeon. But the rooms themselves felt very random and gimmicky; more suited to a Mario video game than the caverns inside a mountain.

So, the resulting adventure is now in playtest on the Basic Fantasy website. You can learn more on its product page. Like my book, and everything else I publish, it is free to download and share under a Creative Commons license. And like my NPC book, I expect that it will eventually be in print, at or near-cost.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-48252701651848880002023-02-15T15:53:00.011-05:002023-03-21T02:17:53.914-04:00Chrysogon's Coterie: 288 NPCs for your Fantasy RPG Campaign

Art by Gabe Fua

I've been working on a fantasy RPG sourcebook for some time and am happy to report that a PDF release is now available for use. Not because I was unsure about my opinion, but that I wanted the statement to be delivered on the Day.

My children have had their own unfortunate experiences with misinterpretations of the Shirt at school. For example, for this year's observance they were horrified to be greeted with "Happy Orange Shirt Day" from classmates in the hallways.

People really don't understand the Orange Shirt. But this is hardly a new phenomenon, or a specifically Indigenous one. My experience with the holidization of tragedy goes back years.

It was a few weeks after Remembrance Day when a colleague took me aside and warned me I should stop wearing the poppy on my lapel.

"Why?" I asked, legitimately confused. They weren't sure of the reason, but were certain that they'd heard from somewhere that it was considered offensive.

As it was the pre-WFH era, with ears everywhere due to the then-revolutionary open floor-plan concept, I dutifully complied. But I've thought about it a lot in the years since, and I'm back to being non-compliant. At the risk of offending someone—and I'm still not sure it's true—I'd like to open a conversation with them about sacrifice and gratitude. Neither diminish in importance over time. Both should be remembered every day of the year.

And so it is with the Orange Shirt.

The Shirt is not like the flag—an
alteration of day-to-day behaviour in light of a current event. It is
not a signal nor a lament for the "new" discovery of bodies.

It's also not costume dress-up or an act of political correctness, as one of my child's teachers suggested. This individual had a crisis of conformity in the middle of the lesson—asking the students how it would affect her reputation if she chose not to wear one, because she didn't agree that a problem with Canada's treatment of Indigenous people really existed. Additionally, that she had her own 'real' tragedy consuming her attention—the treatment of women in Iran—and she wasn't allowed to wear a shirt about that.

The problem of genocide denial could be another post in itself—probably a series—as is whether it's possible to care about tragedy that hasn't affected your own demographic. But with the limited time I have to write these days, I'm instead drafting out my concerns to address during upcoming parent teacher conferences this year.

Summing it up:

It is not a holiday. Recognizing the injustices of Canada's Indian Residential School System is an act in furtherance of Truth and Reconciliation. At best, the System committed cultural genocide; at worst, it condoned murder. "Happy Orange Shirt Day" makes as much sense as "Happy Remembrance Day".

Whether by willing sacrifice or institutionalized genocide, the effects of tragedy—how it changed our country—remains with us year-round.

The Orange Shirt is a reminder, like the poppy—lest we forget. All day, every day, our history is with us.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7065594231739220658.post-27059770829798823342021-11-17T17:47:00.009-05:002023-02-24T00:06:21.608-05:00Free and Open Source Virtual Table Top software
While there's a lot to appreciate about Roll20 and its integration with the books and character sheets of the most popular RPGs—perhaps it's not for everyone.

Transcription (FR)

Subscribe for more episodes:
